Joy Mariama Smith, dis/solution (dis solution), performance

dis/solution (dis solution) is a thirty-minute immersive ritual performance installation where the artist Joy Mariama Smith is absent. Working with dissolution as a healing practice for minoritarian body working, dis/solution intentionally works with salt, charcoal and water as detoxing elements-detoxing from past experiences.

Joy Mariama Smith is native Philadelphian and currently based in Amsterdam. An ongoing question in their work is: What is the interplay between the body and its physical environment? Smith has a strong improvisational practice spanning twenty years and has been active as a performance/installation/movement artist, activist, facilitator, curator and architectural designer. When they choose to teach, they actively try to uphold inclusive spaces. They studied at the Dutch Art Institute, Arnhem; the New School of Architecture & Design, San Diego; L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Paris and Oberlin College, Ohio. Their work has been performed internationally, including at Edition VI – Event and Duration, If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, Amsterdam; SoLow Festival, Philadelphia; Freedom of Movement, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Ponderosa Movement & Discovery in Stolzenhagen, Germany. They were a 2019–20 Fellow at BAK – basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht and currently teach at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO), Amsterdam
